The Short Version

Old neighborhood groups, buy-and-sell groups, that one group a friend added you to in 2017: it adds up. Leaving takes four taps, and Facebook doesn't tell anyone you did it.

How to leave a Facebook group

  1. Open the group.
  2. Click or tap Joined below the group's name or cover photo.
  3. Choose Leave group.
  4. Click or tap Leave group again to confirm.

Only want it out of your Feed?

You don't have to leave. Unfollowing or silencing the group keeps you a member while its posts and alerts go away.

Trying to leave a group chat in Messenger?

That's a different thing with different rules (people do see that you left). Here's how to leave a Messenger group chat.

How to Leave a Facebook Group on iPhone

These steps are for the Facebook app on iPhone and iPad.

Watch this part 0:59
  1. 1

Open the Facebook app and tap Menu (the three lines, often shown with your profile picture). On iPhone it sits at the far right of the bar along the bottom of the screen.

  2. 2

Tap Groups, then Your groups. If you don't see Groups, tap See more.

  3. 3

Select the group you want to leave.

  4. 4

Tap Joined below the group's name.

  5. 5

Tap Leave Group, then tap Leave Group again to confirm.

Faster route: tap the magnifying glass, type the group's name, open the group and jump straight to the Joined button.

How to Leave a Facebook Group on Android

These steps are for the Facebook app on Android phones and tablets.

Watch this part 1:31
  1. 1

Open the Facebook app and tap Menu (the three lines, often shown with your profile picture). On Android it is usually at the right end of the bar at the top of the screen. Some versions put that bar at the bottom instead.

  2. 2

Tap Groups, then Your groups. If you don't see Groups, tap See more.

  3. 3

Select the group you want to leave.

  4. 4

Tap Joined below the group's name.

  5. 5

Tap Leave Group, then tap Leave Group again to confirm.

Can't find the Joined button? Some app versions tuck the membership choices under Options (the three dots) at the top right of the group. Look for Leave group there.

How to Leave a Facebook Group in a Phone Browser

No Facebook app on your phone, or using a work phone? The mobile website in Safari, Chrome or any other browser works almost exactly like the app.

  1. 1

Open your browser and go to facebook.com/groups. Log in if Facebook asks.

  2. 2

Select the group you want to leave. If it isn't in the list, tap the magnifying glass and search for its name.

  3. 3

Tap Joined below the group's name.

  4. 4

Tap Leave group, then tap Leave group again to confirm.

If Facebook keeps nudging you to open the app, tap Not now (or just close the banner). Everything on this list works in the browser.

How to Leave Lots of Facebook Groups Fast

Facebook has no "leave all groups" button. You leave them one at a time. The good news is that each one takes about ten seconds once you get a rhythm going, and a computer is the fastest way to do it.

  1. 1

On a computer, go to facebook.com/groups and look at the Your groups list in the left menu. Click See all if Facebook only shows the first few.

  2. 2

Sort the list in your head into three piles: groups to leave, groups to keep but quiet down, and groups you actually use.

  3. 3

For each group to leave, open it in a new tab (Ctrl-click on Windows, Cmd-click on a Mac), then click Joined, Leave group and Leave group again. Close the tab and move to the next one.

  4. 4

For the keep-but-quiet pile, use Unfollow group from the same Joined menu instead. Those groups stop filling your Feed and you can still find them later.

Skip the "leave all groups" extensions and scripts

Browser extensions and scripts that promise to leave every group for you need access to your logged-in Facebook account, and some ask for your password outright. Facebook also watches for automated activity. For a small business owner whose Page and ad account hang off that same login, a locked account costs far more than the ten minutes you'd save. If Facebook shows a "try again later" message while you're working through a long list, take a break and finish later.

Can You Leave a Facebook Group Without Anyone Knowing?

Mostly, yes. Facebook's Help Center says plainly that members won't be notified if you leave. Here's exactly what changes and what doesn't:

What nobody sees

  • No notification goes to members or admins.
  • No post or "has left the group" message appears in the group.
  • People can no longer tell you've seen a group post, even posts you saw before you left.

What someone could notice

  • Your name drops off the member list, so anyone who looks for you there will see you're gone.
  • Admins can see the member count change.
  • Your old posts and comments stay in the group under your name.

In a small group where everyone knows each other, someone may eventually spot that you're missing. If that matters, the quietest option is not to leave at all: unfollow the group and turn off its notifications, covered next. You stay on the member list and the group simply stops showing up for you.

Leave, Unfollow or Mute? How to Stay but Stop Seeing It

Three quieter options. None of them notify anyone, and you can undo all of them later.

Unfollow the group

You stay a member, but the group's posts stop showing up in your Feed. You can still open the group whenever you want.

How: Open the group, click or tap Joined, then choose Unfollow group. To undo it later, open the group and choose Follow group (in the app it is under Options at the top right).

Unfollow group is in the same Joined menu as Leave group.

Turn off group notifications

Every group starts on Highlights. Switch it to Off and the group stops pinging you, while its posts can still appear in your Feed. Pair it with Unfollow for total silence.

How: Open the group, click or tap Joined (or Options in the top right), then Manage notifications. Under In-app notifications pick All posts, Highlights, Friends' posts or Off, set Push notifications on the same screen, and click Save. Group admins find this under Admin home, then Personal settings, then Manage notifications.

Choose Off in both sections, then click Save. You still get mentions and important group updates.

Snooze one person for 30 days

A temporary break from one noisy member rather than the whole group. Facebook hides that person's posts from your Feed for 30 days, then they come back on their own. When I checked on a computer in October 2026, Facebook only offered Snooze for the person who wrote a group post, not for the group itself, so use Unfollow group if the whole group is the problem.

How: Find a post from that person in your Feed and click the X in its top right corner to hide it. Under Other steps you can take, choose Snooze [name] for 30 days. The same box also offers Unfollow [group name], and Unhide post if you clicked the X by mistake. Some versions of the app show Snooze in the post's three-dot menu instead.

After you hide a group post with the X, Facebook offers to unfollow the group or snooze the person who posted.

Which one should you pick?

Unfollow group Yes No Your setting Nobody
Notifications Off Yes Yes No Nobody
Snooze a person Yes Yes, minus that person for 30 days Your setting Nobody

Getting pinged by @everyone tags? On a computer, click Notifications, find the @everyone notification, click Options next to it and turn off @everyone notifications for that group.

What Happens After You Leave a Facebook Group

The group disappears from your account

It drops off your list of groups, you stop getting its notifications, and its posts stop appearing in your Feed.

Your posts and comments stay

Leaving doesn't delete anything you shared. If there's a post or comment you want gone, delete it before you leave (open it, tap the three dots, then delete). Once you're out of a private group you can't see its posts anymore, so you can't go back and clean up.

Rejoining

You can come back. Find the group and click Join Group. A public group usually lets you straight back in. A private group needs an admin to approve you again, and you may have to answer the membership questions again (unless the group uses limited membership, which lets you in to read but not post until approved).

Nobody can add you back without your say-so

Members can still invite you. You get a notification and can preview the group, but you only become a member again if you decide to join.

Leaving a Group as Your Business Page

Facebook lets you join and post in groups as your business Page instead of your personal profile. Your Page and your profile are separate members, so leaving as yourself doesn't take your Page out of the group, and the other way around. To remove the Page, switch into it first:

On a computer

  1. Click your profile photo in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Click See all profiles, then select your Page.
  3. Go to the group and click Joined, then Leave group.

In the app

  1. Tap Menu or your profile picture.
  2. Tap Options, then select your Page.
  3. Go to the group and tap Joined, then Leave Group.

Switch back to your profile the same way when you're done. Anything your Page posted in the group stays there, just like posts from a personal profile.

If You're the Group's Admin

You can leave a group you run, but plan the handoff. If you're the only admin, Facebook asks you to invite a new admin when you leave. If you don't pick anyone, or nobody accepts the admin invitation within seven days, the group is automatically paused. (You'll see older guides say the only admin can't leave at all. That isn't how it works anymore.)

Hand it off before you go

The cleanest exit is to line up the next admin while you're still in charge, so the group never sits without one:

  1. Open the group and go to Members (in the app it may be under Admin tools or Manage).
  2. Find the person, click or tap the three dots next to their name and choose Make admin.
  3. Wait for them to accept the invitation. The invite doesn't make them an admin until they say yes.
  4. Once they show up as an admin, leave the group the normal way: Joined, then Leave group.

Want the group gone for good rather than handed off? Leaving won't do that. Facebook has a separate option to delete a group you admin (or pause it if you might want it back).

Facebook's own reference: Leave a Facebook group.

Leaving a Messenger Group Chat Instead?

A lot of people searching for this actually mean a group chat in Messenger, not a Facebook group. They work differently, and the biggest difference is privacy: leaving a Facebook group is silent, but leaving a Messenger group chat is not. The other people in the chat see that you left.

In the Messenger app

  1. Open the group chat.
  2. Tap the chat's name at the top.
  3. Scroll down and tap Leave group (some versions say Leave chat).
  4. Tap it again to confirm.

On a computer

  1. Go to facebook.com/messages. (Messenger.com closed in April 2026, so chats on a computer live here now.)
  2. Hover over the group chat in your chat list and click the three dots.
  3. Click Leave group, then confirm.

Want out of the noise without the announcement? Mute the chat instead (same menu). Nobody is told, and you can read it whenever you like.

Some Facebook groups also have community chats attached to them. Leaving one of those chats doesn't take you out of the group, and to leave the group you still use Joined, then Leave group.
